“God’s Number” voor de Rubik-kubus is weer een stapje omlaag gegaan. Vorig jaar bewezen computerwetenschappers Gene Cooperman en Dan Kunkle nog dat de Rubik-kubus vanuit elke toestand kan opgelost worden in maximum 26 stappen. Ik schreef toen:

De auteurs vermelden dat ze met dezelfde technieken binnenkort waarschijnlijk het maximum aantal stappen kunnen reduceren tot 25.

Tomas Rokicki heeft die reductie nu uitgevoerd en heeft Twenty-Five Moves Suffice for Rubik’s Cube gepubliceerd op arXiv.org. De samenvatting:

How many moves does it take to solve Rubik’s Cube? Positions are known that require 20 moves, and it has already been shown that there are no positions that require 27 or more moves; this is a surprisingly large gap. This paper describes a program that is able to find solutions of length 20 or less at a rate of more than 16 million positions a second. We use this program, along with some new ideas and incremental improvements in other techniques, to show that there is no position that requires 26 moves.

Wat Rokicki eigenlijk heeft gedaan is dus bewezen dat je bij het oplossen nooit exact 26 stappen nodig hebt. Gecombineerd met het bewijs van Cooperman en Kunkle bekomen we dan het maximum van 25 stappen. De benodigde rekentijd voor zijn bewijs was ongeveer 1500 CPU-uren op een Q6600 1,6 GHz. Rokicki is al druk bezig met pogingen om de bovengrens te reduceren tot 24:

We continue to execute sets, and we are making progress toward proving a bound of 24. In order to complete this proof without requiring an inordinate number of sets, we need to lift the restriction on our set solver that it only solve sets that have the middle edges in place. Once this is done, we believe that with only a few more CPU months, we can show a new bound of 24 on the diameter of the cube group.

Hij kan natuurlijk hetzelfde als zijn voorgangers meemaken en door nog iemand anders voorgestoken worden, want zij waren ook optimistisch dat ze vlug een stapje verder zouden zijn…
