In het augustusnummer van het interdisciplinaire tijdschrift The Reasoner schrijft filosoof van de wiskunde David Corfield enkele interessante zaken. In de editorial zegt hij dat filosofen van de wiskunde zich in het algemeen te veel op logica gefocust hebben, en te weinig op de praktijk van wiskundigen:

In my experience of working and talking with mathematicians, what is noticeable is the huge amount of informal ‘chat’ going on behind the scenes. I rarely see any desire to apply logical formalisms to the reasoning which is being conducted in these discussions.

Hij bespreekt onder andere de pogingen van George Pólya om toch een deel van inductief wiskundig redeneren formeel uit te drukken. Daarnaast interviewt Corfield filosoof van de wiskunde Brendan Larvor, die vooral bekend is van zijn studie van Imre Lakatos. Volgens Larvor kan Lakatos filosofen van de wiskunde nog tot heel wat vragen inspireren:

For example, how do mathematicians steer their research? How do they evaluate their own work and that of others? To what extent is mathematics a unity? What is the relation between the content of mathematics and the history of mathematics? In what sense, if any, does the history of mathematics exhibit a rational development? What relationships does mathematics have to other disciplines?

Ook voor wiskundigen zijn deze vragen interessant, zo zegt Larvor. Lakatos heeft volgens hem aangetoond dat wiskunde zelf niet volledig kan begrepen worden met louter wiskundige hulpmiddelen. Het nummer van The Reasoner is van de website te downloaden.
