Gian-Carlo Rota over waarheid en verlichting

If the statements of mathematics were mere formally true but in no way enlightening, then mathematics would be no more than a curious game played by some weird people. Enlightenment is what keeps the mathematical enterprise alive, and what gives mathematics a high standing among scientific disciplines.
